The dragon is a combination of many animals. The Chinese people describe the dragon as the composition of parts from nine animals which are the deer’s horns, the camel’s head, the devil’s eyes, the snake’s neck, a large cockle’s abdomen, the scales of a crap, the eagle’s claws, the tiger’s paws and the ears of an ox.

The dragons are considered to have great powers. They believe that the dragons bring rain, control the floods and can take the humans to celestial realms after their death. It was believed that the flood waters are diverted to the rivers which were opened by the dragon when it strikes the river with its tail.

The ancient Chinese emperors were considered as the real dragons. They were treated like the sons of heaven. The beds that were used by the emperors to sleep on were called as dragon beds. The dragon was known as the symbol of natural world which is capable of becoming large or small and dark or bright. In the spring, it can fly in the sky and in the fall it can live under the water. In other words, the dragon has the ability to do anything. They are the governors of rainfalls and it is up to them to decide where and when to rain.

During the Yin and Shang dynasties, the Chinese inscriptions for the dragon used to appear on the turtle shields and bones. The inscriptions were portrayed the dragon as a horned reptile with teeth, scales and paws.

Even today, the Chinese people show great respect for a dragon which is depicted in carvings, pictures or in writings. They prostrate themselves before the image of the dragon with great devotion and reverence. Hence the symbol of a dragon became the dynamic symbol of Chinese nation. In the Qing Dynasty, which is the last feudal dynasty, the dragon is the sign on the national flag.
